I find it difficult to wrap my head around the epic proportions of damage to humans, animals and the environment from the Deep Horizon oil spill. But as a species, we’ve been doing this much damage for decades. So much of it comes from human greed, but it also comes from our own “take it for granted” attitude in our everyday life. Do you ever think that throwing away just a couple of things instead of recycling them will do that much harm? Do we realize how we support the oil industry every single day by owning and driving a vehicle that uses gas? Our electricity comes partly from coal-burning? If you think about the products we use in our everyday life, a huge majority of them have chemicals from oil. The food we eat has added hormones and pesticides. We are a wasteful, sprawling species. Knowing this, will we do anything different? Is it too late? Can we live and survive with the changes we should make now or is it a supreme catch 22 due to the fact that every facet of our lives is immersed in currenct technology to the degree that radical, planet-saving change simply isn’t feasible?
